LONDON WELCOMES SPANISH CLASSICS AT THE BFI SOUTHBANK

Is it possible to make good films during a dictatorship? Between Buñuel and Dalí (Un chien andalou, 1929) and Almodóvar’s first film (Pepi, Luci, Bom, 1980) there emerged a whole series of directors whose films reached audiences and sidestepped censors. More than three decades later, these twenty features reveal an enthralling, daring, and formally innovative era of Spanish cinema.

"If you want to know what makes the likes of Pan’s Labyrinth and Almodovar so exceptional, look no further"- Nick Funnel Time Out London about Spain Uncensored 9/1/2008

Coming from New York where the program had an unprecedent success at The Museum of Modern Art, the series premieres this Tuesday January 15, at the BFI SOUTHBANK. And if you come to four or more screenings, you will get a copy of the book Breaking the Code: Daring films that mocked the repression in Spain absolutely FREE!
