CRITICAL ACCLAIM FOR SPANISH FILMSOur Spanish film festival tour has created enthusiasm among critics and audiences alike. In the tradition of the national survey of critics, iW Critics Poll draws attention to the year’s best films produced during 2008 and best undistributed films. Remarkably, two of the films named were featured in our FESTIVAL OF NEW SPANISH CINEMA. The film IN THE CITY OF SYLVIA has been mentioned by 20 critics, including Village Voice’s J. Hoberman and Variety ‘s Robert Koehler; and BIRDSONG was heralded as Best Undistributed Film by 15 critics including Variety, Newsday, Washington Post’s John Anderson, Time Out’s Ben Kenigsberg and Cineaste’s Richard Porton. As Robert Koehler has claimed, "There is no European filmmaker (Albert Serra) to have emerged in the past five years (at least) to make the distinct impression that their art is absolute, inviolate, a discipline, a calling, a quest--certainly something that can’t and probably won’t be tamed."
