Dangerous Cinema?, THE DEUTSCHE KINEMATHE BerlinJun 11–Jun 12

THE DEUTSCHE KINEMATHEK hosts a conference devoted to conflicting cinema. Filmmaker and historian Marti Rom will talk about the Spanish case during Franco’s time. A screening of four clandestine Spanish films will premiere in Germany for the first time.

Are films dangerous? Restrictive measures such as censorship and age restrictions accompany the film since its birth and prove to be – real or fictitious – impact. Examples from more than 100 years of film history, provide information on variability and continuity of censorship decisions should not be underestimated their impact on film history, production and distribution practices.

What does meet those films that move on the edge of the permissible and tolerable, and how they find their audience? As the archives go with unwanted stocks of questionable and controversial films to? How can the challenge be met, which is the Internet as a new distribution medium for criminal copyright problem and moving images? The colloquium is devoted to these and other questions about illicit, trimmed and outrageous films.

Speakers include Rainer Rother, Roland Seim , Ursula von Keitz, Christiane von Wahlert, Christian Bartsch, Henrike Maaß, Marcus Stiglegger, Birgit Hein, Jürgen Brüning, Dorothee Wenner, Till Kreutzer, Stefanie Schulte Strathausr and Marti Rom.

About Marti Rom:
Rom is an idustrial ingenier that co-founded the “Central Short” (1974-1982), the only clandestine film distributor at the end of the Franco regime, the transition and beginning of democracy. His works as a filmmaker includes A book is a weapon (1975) and Can Serra, conscientious objection in Spain (1976), Noticiaris (The Marx of the llibertat, La dona i Born) (1976-1977). As a film writer, he specialized in alternative films made in Catalonia. He wrote in magazines such as Cinema 2001, and Directed by. Since 1982 he
has been making documentaries and books devoted to the most prestigious Catalan intelectuals and artist, including Carles Santos, Joan Margarit, Llorenç Soler, Joaquin Jorda, Antoni Padrós and Julieta Serrano. Currently he is writing the most intensive book and documentary about widely known Pere Portabella.
