After completing her film studies at EICTV in Cuba, Laura Amelia Guzmán moved to Mexico, where she directed her debut feature film Cochochi (2005), shot in the Sierra Tarahumara. This film marked the beginning of her creative partnership with Mexican filmmaker Israel Cárdenas as co-directors. They went on to collaborate on Carmita, filmed in Monterrey, and later relocated to Santo Domingo in 2012, where they co-directed a series of critically acclaimed films: Jean Gentil, Dólares de Arena, and La Fiera y La Fiesta.

Most recently, the duo produced Croma Kid, which premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. They are currently in post-production on Interior Apartamento Día, a film that explores the dynamics of early-stage romantic relationships—identity, intimacy, love, and sacrifice.

In 2023, Laura Amelia made her solo directorial debut with Babygirl (La Hembrita), which was nominated for Best Ibero-American Film at the Ariel Awards 2024. She has been a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since 2016.
