Álex de la Iglesia (THE PERFECT CRIME, THE LAST CIRCUS), the gonzo auteur of Spanish cinema, turns all the dials up to maximum in this deliciously overstuffed showbiz satire. Set at a TV studio where a gaudy New Year’s Eve special is being shot under chaotic circumstances, the pinballing plot concerns a vain veteran crooner (played by self-parodying superstar Raphael) who sabotages an empty-headed young pop star (Casas, whose ultra-tacky “Fireman” number is a riot) while his downtrodden son engages a disgruntled songwriter to assassinate the old man, and a pair of greedy groupies set out to procure a vial of the pop star’s semen. And that’s not the half of it! De la Iglesia and longtime screenwriting partner Jorge Guerricaecheverría keep all the balls in the air with vigorous camerawork and a solid sense of structure. Get ready for a great time. My Big Night is more than a film—it’s a party!
