Film series highlights social justice issues

Linda Elman, associate professor of Spanish, was studying filmmaker Icíar Bollaín on her sabbatical when she learned of the Spanish Film Club, an organization that allows universities to apply for grants to host film festivals. Elman applied for and won a grant from Pragda Films, with support from the Secretary of State for Culture of Spain.

Beyond the Borders

Five films from Spain and Latin America – including an Oscar-nominated animated feature – will be shown on campus this fall. The Spanish Film Club series is an initiative between Pragda Films and American universities to create new audiences for recent feature-length films from Spanish-speaking countries. DePauw is one of 44 universities to be awarded a matching grant for the film festival.

Spanish Department to Host Film Festival Sept. 6-Oct. 4

The Spanish Department, along with the student groups Sigma Delta Pi (the Spanish honor society) and Latinos Unidos, are hosting a film festival Sept. 6-Oct. 4 that will feature five films from Spanish-speaking countries. The theme of the film festival is “Cinematic Sexuality / Sexualidad cinemática: A Transnational Spanish Film Festival.” The theme was picked to go along with Southwestern’s 2013 Brown Symposium, which will focus on sexuality.

PRAGDA group sponsors free, Spanish film series at Willamette next fall

Five new Spanish-language films will be showcased at Willamette University next fall, due to a grant from the PRAGDA organization. The mission of the group, based in Brooklyn, N.Y., is to share Spanish-language films with diverse audiences. With the grant, assistant professor Anna Cox of the Spanish and film studies departments will debut a film series over a five-week period in Ford Hall. The movies will be free and open to the public. The dates and times of the showings have yet to be announced.

La empresa Pragda, dedicada a promover el cine español en Norteamerica, ha puesto en marcha un innovador proyecto, Spanish Film Club, cuyo objetivo es promover y facilitar la organizacion de eventos de cine español y latinoamericano en universidades de Estados Unidos y Canada, ofreciendo peliculas y apoyo financiero a dichas entidades. El plazo de solicitud de ayuda concluye el 15 de marzo.
