Synopsis

Spanish with English subtitles

With Belén Herrera Riquelme, Consuelo Carreño, Iseda Sepúlveda, Etienne Herrera Riquelme, Nathalia Galgani

Set in a near-future Chile, Where the Sky Touches the Earth follows a nomadic community of women who flee the cities to survive an authoritarian state. Years after a mysterious event fractured society, they built a fragile refuge in the countryside, where shared rituals and mutual care helped them resist the violence that still advances from outside

Lorna, the only woman in the group without the facial mark that brands the persecuted, cannot stop questioning who she is and where she comes from. Her search for answers about her missing mother and about the mark itself pushes her to cross the boundaries of the safe zone and to confront the official truth that the regime imposes.

Directed by Lola Contreras, the film combines the harshness of state persecution with the calm of the Chilean landscape, turning nature into both shelter and witness. It offers a visually striking tale of identity, resistance and matriarchal solidarity, where the struggle for freedom unfolds in the tension between collective protection and one woman’s need to know who she really is.

Notes on the Film

“Inspired by the heart of Chile, where breathtaking landscapes collide with a polarized society and face the social isolation caused by the COVID pandemic, Where the Sky Touches the Earth emerges. This film is a visceral exploration of a dystopian world where identity fades in the shadows of an implacable state.

In the near future, an eclipse triggers a pandemic. This isn’t only a story about a disease, but about the havoc it wreaks on the very fabric of society. The plot follows a group of women persecuted by an oppressive state, who are forced to flee the cities in search of freedom and survival through a nomadic lifestyle. It’s a fictionalization of our misogynistic society, where women feel persecuted and segregated, shown through the intimacy of the characters’ relationships. At the center of this odyssey is Lorna, the only non-spotted member of the community. She’s confronted with a heartbreaking truth about her surroundings and the mysterious disappearance of her mother. Her search for answers will lead her to question her own identity, her confidence in her gender, and the true meaning of isolation in a world where human connection is both a luxury and a dangerous privilege.

This film is my journey to reconnect with the female gender after being sexually abused by my girl best friend six months into the pandemic. Where the Sky Touches the Earth dives into universal themes that resonate in contemporary society: the struggle for identity in an ever-changing world, the empowerment of women in the face of patriarchy, and the fragility of trust in an environment marked by betrayal and secrecy. It’s a testimony to the strength of the human spirit, of women in community, and to the ability to find light amid darkness.”
