With Margot Fonteyn, Tito Arias

PANAMA’S OFFICIAL SUBMISSION FOR THE ACADEMY AWARDS®  BEST INTERNATIONAL FILM

A cinematic portrait unfolds of the larger-than-life love story between Panamanian diplomat Tito Arias and renowned dancer Dame Margot Fonteyn.

This biographical documentary skillfully intertwines interviews, archival footage, personal correspondence, nostalgic photographs, poignant dance sequences, and excerpts from Fonteyn’s autobiography. It illuminates their enduring bond amidst familial trials, political pressures, and profound love.

Their journey, veiled in fame, infidelities, a coup attempt supported by Fidel Castro, and an assault that rendered Tito Arias quadriplegic, emerges as a captivating narrative of resilience and devotion.

Press

“The track of the closest witnesses of the relationship between Arias and Fonteyn and, beyond the show business, discovers a story full of grays, conspiracies, and tragedy. A biographical documentary, a political drama, and a tribute to dance.”Ibermedia

“Directors Mercedes Arias and Delfina Vidal have reconvened to relay the fascinating tale of Panamanian politico Tito Arias – the director’s first cousin once removed – and his wife, renowned ballerina Dame Margot Fonteyn.” – Holly Jones, Variety

“An intimate look at the life of the lady of the British Empire and first ballerina of the Royal Ballet and her Central American diplomat husband, who was the son of a Panamanian president. The filmmakers took a journey through the visible past and at the same time imaginary, in search of the meaning and the signifier of love for this couple that remained united for more than three decades, accompanied by the last testimonies that validated their perspective of it history.”Cinema Tropical

About the Director
Mercedes Arias, along with Delfina Vidal, is the founder of Betesda Films and works as a director and producer of independent documentaries. She has won two grants from the Panamanian Film Authority to carry out these projects transforming the content into award-winning programming. Case in point: Box 25, a documentary about the construction of the Panama Canal, is told through first-person accounts from the very men who excavated the Canal in the early 20th century. This film piqued the curiosity of a new generation of Panamanians who had grown up with a historical vacuum of knowledge about issues such as dictatorship and racial discrimination, which were never part of Panama’s educational curricula.

Delfina Vidal, is a director and screenwriter with more than 20 years of experience in film and television production. She has directed and produced with her partner Mercedes Arias the documentaries Case in point: Box 25, A Different Day, and Out, la salida está en tu mente and the most recent Tito, Margot and Me, winner of the Ibermedia Fund 2019 and the Panama Film Fund. She has specialized in documentary filmmaking and was a student of Patricio Guzmán, Marta Andreu, and Marta Hincapié. As a university professor, she has taught at the University of Panama, Santa Maria La Antigua University, and the University of the Isthmus. She has participated as a jury member in the HAYAH Festival, the ICARO Festival, and at academic school and university competitions.

Notes on Film

“Many of my memories were boxed in old albums. In my case, a heavy detachment from my very political paternal family is a fact of life. When I was compelled to dig deeper, the box’s lid opened and I knew, then and there, that my Uncle Tito needed a second reading.

This story is not about ballet, but about love and how two very different characters decide to make it work as they redefine real love.

My co-director Delfina Vidal was the one person who, even before me, fell in love with their story.”
