Based on one of Peru’s most important literary works, A World for Julius by Alfredo Bryce Echenique, this film follows the life of an upper-class child in 1950s Lima. Julius, who lives in a grand mansion with his aristocratic family and a bevy of servants, gradually loses his innocence as he encounters—though never fully comprehends—a world riddled with inequalities and injustices.

Since its publication, A World for Julius has been celebrated as one of the most remarkable depictions of the Peruvian upper class. The novel established Bryce as one of Peru’s most renowned writers. Decades later, the book remains a classic of Latin American literature and a crucial reference for examining the privileged existence of the Peruvian bourgeoisie and its perception of the country’s social life during the first half of the twentieth century.

About the Director
Rossana Díaz Costa is a writer, screenwriter, and director. She published her first book of short stories in Peru in 2006. Her life is divided between literature and cinema. While studying Literature at the Catholic University of Peru, she became interested in film and enrolled in the Faculty of Communication Sciences at the University of Lima.

In 2006 she finished her screenwriting studies at the Escuela de Cinematografía y del Audiovisual de la Comunidad de Madrid (ECAM). During her three years of studies, she wrote several short films, medium-length films, TV series projects, and feature films, such as the adaptation of the novel A World for Julius, by Peruvian writer Alfredo Bryce Echenique, and the original screenplay for Viaje a Tombuctú.

Notes on Film

“I read A World for Julius when I was twelve years old and it was the first adult novel that impressed, moved, and hurt me. I think it was the first time I was hurt by Peru if that is possible. I remember that I associated what was happening in Peru at that time, those dark eighties, with what Bryce related in this novel. I think, also, that it was the first time I thought about the inequality of Peru, asking myself so many questions at once, confused, just as Julius’ character feels at the end of the novel.

This film reveals an unjust reality that has been repeated over the centuries throughout Latin America and that is the origin of almost all our social conflicts, so it is a film that can generate reflection, awareness, and further dialogue. I am hopeful that this will happen.”
